Role of Omega-3 Acids in the Healthy Diet

All too often we are so scared of fats and their negative effects on our bodies that we try to eliminate them ALL from our diet. The effect? Our diet becomes just as bad as these which encourage high fat intake.

One kind of fat that should remain in your diet is Omega-3. These fatty acids are both safe to your heart and blood circulation and beneficial in case of many health conditions. Their anti-inflammatory effect has only been recently discovered and the researchers are sure that this is only the beginning of much longer story, but even know we know enough about Omega-3 acids to be aware of their great potential in improving our health.

This information has not been made up: even American Heart Association advise using Omega-3 acids-rich food such as fatty fish because of the benefits it gives to cardiovascular health conditions. Other researches indicate that Omega-3 fatty acids may help combat such conditions as autism, diabetes, asthma or menstrual cramps. Omega-3 fatty acids can be naturally found only in few kinds of food. Fatty fish such as salmon or herring, and shellfish are the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. The only other real source of them is flax - it is the only real source of Omega-3 fatty acids for vegetarians. The attempts of enriching other foods with Omega-3 acids, while commendable, can't change the sad truth: we, in general, do not intake as much Omega-3 fatty acids as we should.

Creating a complete and tasty diet with the right amount of Omega-3 fatty acids is therefore quite difficult, especially for vegetarians and those who do not love eating fish.
