The Americans couldn't have cared any lesser for exercises had it not been the expanding waistlines that caught them unawares. The upward spiral of the waist has given them a rude jolt making them suddenly wake up to the importance of exercise. The effects of the sedentary lifestyle have started reflecting in the form of obesity. Obesity causes harmful diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and even liver failure. So for a healthy living it is important to go for a nutritious and balanced diet and to exercise. The unpleasant connotations of exercise come from the image of overactive aerobics teachers in skimpy skintight outfits making people work out constantly. What happens is that excessive exercise leads to frustration and exhaustion and the enthusiasm to reduce weight dies down. They go back to their sedimentary lifestyle. This is the wrong way to go about it. Instead, if you do regular exercise for fifteen minutes over a period of time instead of all at once, you will be healthier than those who work out for an hour a week. Many people have difficulty in exercising alone, so the best way is to involve a family member or a friend. This makes it less of a chore as you always have a motivator to look up to. If you fail to find suitable partner then join any exercise group. Nowadays majority gyms, fitness parlors and exercise groups offer the exercise lessons for free or for minimal charges. Exercise is the best way to make and interact with friends and regain the lost health. Always avoid setting very ambitious goals. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. Don't set goals that are hard to achieve. You will be frustrated and will lose the motivation to go on. You can gradually increase the difficulty level as you build stamina and begin to see results. It's a good idea to set a long term and short term goal. If your long term goal is to live a healthier life, you may consider playing a game of soccer with your children, without becoming breathless, your short term goal. This way you can go on making more short term goals as you inch towards a healthy, fit lifestyle. You can exercise at home if you can't afford to join a gym. However, you will have to buy a few basic things like weights and mats. You may want to invest in a tread mill or chair climber to build your own gym. This way you won't have to travel anywhere and you can do the work outs at your own convenience. If the weather is on your side then take your exercise to the outdoors. Start small with a stroll, and if you want to take it a step further, consider jogging. Playing with kids also gives you some exercise although you need to add something more to your daily exercise regime. Going in for baseball, basketball, soccer or even plain old tag will do wonders. Many individuals find joining a gym is an excellent way to ensure they exercise and complete their goals. In addition to the abundance of equipment found in a gym, the financial commitment often provides the much needed encouragement to work out regularly.
