My last article was about the myth of retirement, and how it robs most people of the happiness they hope for. It really struck a nerve with many of my readers that have a business on the Internet. If you've been patiently waiting for my solution... your wait is over. And if your current situation seems hopeless, you're in luck. You see, right now most people have a false sense of certainty about what they believe will be their likely future. Truth be told, most entrepreneurs' envisioned future isn't much different from an infant's security blanket - they both don't serve any real purpose other than providing a false sense of security. I know what I just wrote sounds cold, but think about it. Could you have predicted your current situation (good or bad) 5 years ago? How about 10 years ago? Before you can predict anything, you need to have a clue about the overall context - the environment you currently operate in running a business on the Internet. You don't have to look far to see how running a business on the Internet changes often. Tactics that worked a year ago are no longer effective because of overuse. Things that affect your business outside of the Internet won't stay the same either. Why do you think the business world is so competitive? Your business on the Internet cannot stand up against the winds of change. Books like In Search of Excellence and Good To Great showcased businesses that were supposed to be built to last. The truth is, after many years, that most of those businesses were as sensitive to a changing world as any are today. That's why it's no longer safe to assume that your tomorrow will be like today or yesterday, no matter how excellent you've been or how long you've been around. Moreover, the further you go out into the future the more your vision of a business on the Internet may resemble a fairy tale. When GP first told me about her grueling schedule I asked her when she made time for fun. Initially she tried to feed me some line about making time here and there. My experience coaching so many people with successful businesses on the Internet taught me not to challenge closely held beliefs head on. If you do all you meet up with is a lot of resistance. See, many people think they make time for fun when they really don't. This is what my masseuse was doing. Then she told me the things she likes to do to have fun are things she used to do before she started working so much. She was wasting each day by working with her nose to the grindstone with no end in sight. Her work everyday was a certainty in her life that she thought would always be there. It was much more certain than the prospect of finding true happiness. This is a common situation, I hate to say. It all comes down to the fact that people generally will stick with something they are not happy doing to avoid the uncertainty of going for what they really want out of life. If you're up for being really honest with yourself - could you identify areas of your life where you are currently making this same choice. If you ever answered a dream with "Sure, I'd love to, but what if..." What follows next is usually an uncertainty that is dominating your life decisions and that of your business on the Internet. To help GP get back in touch with the important things in life, like enjoying yourself, we talked about making a running list of things we really liked to do for fun. If you do the same exercise you may wake up your mind and realize life is too short to work yourself to death for something you're not happy to have. If you have a business on the Internet now or you'd just like to have one someday, you must make time for fun. Make your list of things you enjoy and find the time in your schedule to enjoy them. Don't make the big mistake of waiting for retirement to start enjoying life.
