Creating Effective Web Copy that Sells

By: Vlad Ehrsam

Internet businesses experience low ranking at one time or another. The cause is unclear, but there is a solution. With a little brush up, our websites can generate the traffic they once did. All it takes is an understanding of how search engines work, and the creation of words that drive target traffic to your site.

To keep with the times, businesses need a web copy writer on board that is highly experienced in SEO (Search Engine Optimized) keywords. If you're creative enough, you can take a stab at it yourself. Use caution though, you want the content to be rich in keywords but not overpowering.

Here are a few tips to success ...

Everything you thought you understood about writing, forget it. Web copy needs to be conversational in tone meaning traditional no-no's such as fragments and sentences ending in prepositions are all right in this format.

Try using a font that is easy on the eyes. Webmasters tend to prefer Times New Roman, Verdana, or Arial. Also, the content should flow.

SEO Friendly

A good thing to remember when writing SEO copy is that it is better to use less to say more. Many surfers merely scan the content for important points so there is no need for long paragraphs. Leave out any language that makes you sound like an intellectual and just use the basic commands of the English Language.

Headers: 6-8 words only Sentence length: 15-20 words on average Paragraph length: no fewer than 3 sentences, 5 maximum Word Count: approximately 350

The keyword problem seems like an unending vicious cycle that can make you ill at times. What are keywords anyway? Who uses these keywords and what search engines would it be best for me to use. And on, and on....

Google or Yahoo (search engines) use the text (keyword/ keyword phrase) typed in the search box to locate websites. For instance, if you're looking for a maid, you would type the words "maid service", "maid", or "housecleaner" in the search engine. The search engine then finds all of the websites associated with that word. Keyword positioning on your web page will determine how fast the search engines locate your site.

Before you begin, carefully create words that are associated with the product or service you sell. Keywords and keyword phrases should be realistic. A true web copy writer can weave the words and phrases into the web page content easily.

You need to make your home page the focal point. Headings should have no fewer than 6 words but not exceed 8. Make sure your keywords appear in the heading but make sense doing so to increase your odds.

Acting as a sales letter, this page needs to be easy to read yet clear and to the point. Introduce your visitor to your business as if you were chatting with a friend. But, fill the content will keywords that flow, weaving in and out of paragraphs.

Big Mistakes

It takes a lot of time and practice to craft seo friendly web copy. Many writers will start writing seo articles without a clear understanding of the nature of keywords and how they are used by search engines. It is common for beginners to concentrate too much on the keywords and they wind up with unreadable copy that ultimately drives surfers away.

To sell your product or service you must write about the benefits and not about the features. People want to know what they will gain from using your product or service. Dedicate the content to focusing on "What's in it for them."

Not editing your web copy properly can also be a huge problem. Grammar errors leave a poor first impression. Rule of thumb is to have a second party review your work, and be consistent!

Recall that web copy is just a series of informative pages. Every page should prod visitors to the next. The goal is to convince surfers to make a purchase from your company. But, you are never going to get the opportunity to tell people about the benefits of your company unless the search engines can reach you.
