It’s strange how you need to have laws, and actually need to enforce them, sometimes with fines, to ensure that people take care of themselves and their own safety. Thus you have laws to ensure that children get vaccinated against polio, tuberculosis etc. You have laws banning driving after having consumed alcohol. Seat belts were introduced to protect drivers in case of accidents. This didn’t catch on (either uncomfortable or even considered boring or goody goody!!) So laws were introduced fining drivers for not having their seat belts on. And if that was not good enough, automobile manufactures were forced to supply seat belts for front seats without charging extra. With mobile phones –new hazards have come into our lives, not only affecting the user but also indirectly people around. One of the potential hazards one now faces is the car driver talking on the mobile phone while driving in India. It is bad enough if he ends up with an accident, worse if he causes accident to innocent people on the road. What’s even more irritating for other drivers on the road is, as the mobile phone usurers attention is on the conversations in progress he then either drives badly or gets in the way of other drivers, who have to watch out for his movements too. While it is unlawful, perhaps another ‘compulsory seat belt accessory for front seats’ is perhaps required for mobile phones to ensure safety for all. Mobile phone manufactures often supply a ‘hands free’ devices free with phones. But people are likely to find such devices inconvenient, and may end up not using them. One new feature often found on mobile phones, and now should be made a compulsory feature in all phones (like seatbelts for front seats) is the speaker phone. At a click of a button, now one can talk on the phone while driving. This should be made a compulsory feature in all mobile phones. While still a potential hazard, it at least a further step in ensuring public safety. At least it is much more convenient, but should be used only in emergencies. The best law though not practiced by all is not to take any calls while driving, and have an automatic answering machine inform the caller that you will call at the earliest when you are not driving. Else, you can park your car at the side of the road and take the call if it is important or and emergency. Drive safely; your life is important to the nation.
