These knobs usually have latching facilities that guard and protect your home. They are the strongest locks, containing keyed cylinders. Traditionally door knobs were made of brass and copper. However, these days, the elegant and stylish door knobs are made of steel and aluminum which boost their charm.

Privacy door knobs are smart knobs that are usually used in bathrooms or private rooms. These knobs have the convenience of latching the door, but they do not have keyed cylinders. They contain a standard unlocking system. Privacy door knobs are commonly made of wood.

You cannot turn a dummy doorknob. A dummy Doorknob is more like a handle and do not have any locking apparatus. These doorknobs are commonly used in closets. Dummy doorknobs can be carved out of any material like glass or wood that goes with the texture of the closet. These doorknobs are also made of bones and precious metals. The dummy doorknobs are ornately engraved and contain flourishes, as they are mere show offs and used as handles only.

Passage doorknobs are installed on the doors, which do not need a lock, but these doorknobs have latch mechanism and you can turn them. Mostly these doorknobs are used for cupboards and inner rooms that don't need locks. These locks can be crafted from a variety of materials, the most commons being glass and wood.

Another important accessory for your door is the trim. This can be wood or metal or even just a border of paint. This can really set off a plain door and enhance the beauty of your home.
