The internet is an exciting place for fun and educational information. Additionally, the World Wide Web serves as a great way to stay close with friends and family members, no matter how far away they live. However, the internet has become an increasingly dangerous place for children, as predators use the network to lure children into their web of hurt and deceit. A phenomenal number of children each year fall victim to internet predators. Many are just involved with these individuals over the internet and never actually meet the predator. Friends, family members, or even law enforcement puts a stop to the relationship before it gets out of hand. Unfortunately, many more children are not so lucky and meet these individuals face to face. Often, these individuals abduct, rape, torture, or even kill these poor children. By sensing this danger many Internet companies like America Online, Yahoo and Netscape have started offering a feature of parental vigilance. This restricts the kid's access to the Internet and parents get the chance to monitor them. Simply stated, if you don't allow your kids to watch obscene shows on television, they shoul not be allowed to access or open any unsuitable site. Speak with your child and teach them internet safety techniques. Only allow your child to converse with individuals you know, and monitor them during the conversation. Encourage your child to come to you with any problems or if an unknown individual is contacting them over the internet. These days there are strict rules and guidelines to follow for accessing the Internet in schools and libraries. If they are allowed to access web by any means then a constant observation over them is must. In case there is a case of careless and negligent management then you should contact the school authorities. When your child visits a friend, make sure all parties—including the child’s parent guardian—know of your stance on internet access. Many parents only permit their child to access the internet at a friend’s house if adult supervision is present. If you do not feel comfortable allowing this, then make your wishes be known. At home, you should place the family computer in a central location where others can see the screen. It's better to put the family computer in the kitchen or family room, instead of having a separate room for it. All these are precautions to avoid the eventuality of your child being left alone while exploring the internet. This way you can be present if any problem arises. Also, teach your child about the dangers of the internet. You should not deliberately scare your child into a certain behavior, but let him or her know the potential problems that may arise. Also notify your child of the proper way to report problems or screennames of individuals who are participating in unsavory communication. Ensuring your child’s protection while on the internet will not only give you a safe piece of mind, but it will also notify your child of the proper way to explore the World Wide Web. The internet can be a fantastic place for kids of all ages as soon as you instruct your child to the right and wrong of the internet.
