Are Tower Booms the Ultimate Solution for Your Boat?

By: Lane "Dawg" Bowers

Correct Craft changed the world of water skiing forever when they introduced and patented the first tower to be used on water ski boats in 1996. The tower attaches to the boat via highly specialized bases that bolt through the deck of the boat usually in four attachment points, but sometimes in only two. This 7 foot structure puts the rope attachment point almost twice as high as the ski pylon used since the beginning of water skiing. Having a dramatically increased upward pull makes the skier feel lighter on the water as well as reduces the impact of falls among all types of water skiing.

Not only do skiers find that they feel stronger and lighter when skiing on the tower, there were other added bonuses like keeping the rope from hitting passengers in the head while someone is skiing. The new trend is "bling-out" your tower with the coolest equipment like board racks, lights, and speakers that make your ride a true expression of your personality. When you do not want the tower up, it can be collapsed for going under bridges or for traveling to and from the lake.

One of the obvious advantages of the tower is taking advantage of the all new tower boom which can put the entire boom on the tower and out of the boat. The ski pylon or gunnel were the only available attachment points for a boom before the tower. Having the option of either using the ski pylon or tower allows you to choose what will work best for your boat. If you are interested in the latest technology, you will choose the latter.

The benefits of having a tower boom, I will list here;

1. it keeps the boom out of the boat thus freeing up space inside the boat

2. it folds up easily for storage

3. the telescoping extensions that secure it to the tower allow for raising and lowering it

4. looking cool is standard with the tower boom because it does not look like any other boom

5. the upward pull and the rigidity of the tower boom make beginning skiers feel more confident during the learning stages

6. as with all booms, the added stability reduces injuries and falls

I recommend finding a supplier who will stick his neck out and guarantee that their tower boom will fit your tower. There are tower booms for every tower so make sure you get someone who is experienced in getting you the correct one. If you do not get this type of service, find someone else.

If you know your tower tubings out diameter, then that is all you need to get the right tower boom. If you are not sure of how to get this measurement, then you will need to know your tower manufacturer and year it was built.

There are three clamps that need to be mounted on your tower. The boom clamp mounts to the back leg of the tower as low as possible. The addition two clamps are mounted up high on the tower with one on the back leg and one on the front leg to form a triangle between the three. This mounting system is the most stable of any type of boom.

Once your clamps are all mounted, you will put the boom together to get an idea of how long your extension arms must be. After you attach your first extension arm, you can adjust either of them to put the boom in the desired position. Once you like the location of the boom while it is together, you can adjust the two cables to where there is no slack.

Having the coolest looking boom in the world will be a source of pride for a very long time. But what you will be most excited about is the benefits you get from helping teach your family and friends to ski without all the problems that come from trying to learn on the long line.
