America's Continuing Infatuation with Hollywood

By: Jasmine Almira

Hollywood movie stars have almost reached god-like status in the United States. They are envied, adored, worshipped, and admired. What is it about these people that is so intriguing and why do we devote so much time and energy trying to find out about their personal lives?

Anyone questioning whether or not America is obsessed with Hollywood needs only turn on the television to see how movie stars and celebrities dominate our news and just about everything we see. Even the fashion magazines have movie stars on the cover; the super models have been banished to the back pages. Movie stars and celebrities are everywhere but what makes these people so special?

Much of the Hollywood exposure has more to do with looks and skilled public relations personnel. Hollywood actors and actresses are prepped and polished long before the public ever sets eyes upon them. The stars look flawless - everything is perfect, from their hair styles and makeup, to their perfect clothes in designer size 0. It's an interesting dichotomy, what fascinates us (the hair, makeup, clothes, jewels) also make people feel inferior and in awe of the rich and famous. They seem to have all things most of us imagine only in our wildest dreams.

Also people usually are not able to separate the Hollywood actors from the on-screen personas and very often feel that they know these stars well. But no matter how many interviews you would have seen of these stars you have no idea of how they are in their real lives.

Becoming a famous Hollywood star has more to do with Luck than talent. It helps to be in the right place at the right time, or better yet, to be related know someone famous. Few Hollywood stars are hired for their abilities to act these days; even if you are remarkable beautiful, if you don't know someone who can give you an 'in', you don't really have much chance of hitting the big time.

The same rules seem to apply to musicians. Just look at some of the multi-millionaire pop singers and ask yourself how many of them are truly musicians (can they sing or play an instrument)? Considering the frequent accusations of lip-synching, it appears that not many have the talent. It's unfortunate that looks have become more important than talent in establishing a career.

Though the stars love to be adored by the public and the media alike, they also have to face the repercussions of being too much in the limelight. Many of the stars have been troubled by star fixated fans some of whom actually become stalkers and harass them. This problem is more in mentally weak people who develop a personal relationship with the onscreen personas of the stars.

You can gauge the star power of the Hollywood stars from the fact that in the last Presidential election in US many stars were called upon to rally against George Bush. It is a separate matter that Bush won again and people didn't let the stars detract them from their choice.

Hollywood stars make use of their stardom at every opportunity that they get. They earn millions from their fans who are always dying to get a glimpse of their favorite star. Gossip magazines and tabloid papers print all kind of stories, true and false, about these stars. People are aware that many of these stories are baseless but nonetheless they buy them like hot cakes. One can say that the Hollywood mania continues to rule the roost in US.
