A Road Network that Works

By: Abhimanyu Singh

That’s what we call a change in the way we drove and traveled.

India happily enters the age of expressways and high-speed highways all of which attract toll. That means at every stretch which is privately built you have to pay. Whenever I go for a long drive I greet the great country of ours that has finally woken up to a road network that works.

Let’s look at how the network should work and how it is transforming the way we were driving and traveling. I will take an example to explain my point. Delhi to Jaipur is an about 275 km drive.

You rest your foot on your accelerator and then can hope to zoom most of your way except at the places where a stretch of the Golden Quadrilateral Expressway is being built – mostly at the Delhi-Gurgaon border areas and the places where you have to pay toll. It is a heavy toll; of course it depends upon the length of the privately built stretch of the road.

From Delhi you enter New Gurgaon and then go past Manesar. You slow down at Bhiwadi. This much distance, about 80 km, you will have done in less than an hour at a speed of about 100 km an hour. After Bhiwadi you cross the new and upcoming industrial townships of Bawal followed by Shahpura and Neemrana. It is a superb stretch and you can go singing and driving at 120 kmph unstopped.

Then you slow down around Kotputli where yet another township is planned although the traces of it are yet to come up. Here we enter the Jaipur district known for its tourist pink city. And we are here in about two and a half hour. We hit Jaipur in about another 15 minutes or so.

That’s what we call a change in the way we drove and traveled. This distance just a couple of years back would take close to five hours, with the kind of roads that we had had. With the change come the issues related to road safety in India. As Indian road traffic undergoes transformation, Mumbai traffic, Bangalore traffic, Delhi traffic and Chennai traffic goes for complete spin. The road authorities must be watchful about the rising incidence of road rage in the meanwhile.
